Shift from Private Cars key to Energy Efficiency

(22 Jul 2011)

Energy use in the transport sector accounts for almost 35% of total energy use in Ireland, more than any other sector. Private car use in turn accounts for almost half of energy usage in the transport sector.

In launching a €55million investment programme in sustainable transport projects, the Minister for Public Transport and Commuter Policy, Alan Kelly, noted that ‘The last census showed that over 200,000 of us drive less than 4 kilometres to work. To incentivise people to not use their cars, we have to make walkways, cycle paths and the road network more user-friendly.’

The success of the Dublin Bikes scheme is evidence that a shift is possible. Dublin Bikes has recently surpassed over two million journeys, less than two years after the launch of the scheme.
