Comhar propose Green New Deal for Ireland

(09 Oct 2009)

Comhar, the Sustainable Development Council, has published a ‘Green New Deal’ for Ireland with the following declared objectives:

  • reviving the Irish economy through building an innovative, low-carbon and resource-efficient society;
  • protecting ecosystems and biodiversity while reducing fossil fuel dependency;
  • providing for greater social inclusion through stimulating new green jobs and reducing fuel poverty.

Comhar believes that these objectives would be met by a stimulus package of up to €4 billion a which could create at least 100,000 direct and indirect new jobs. Comhar proposes that the Irish Government should commit up to 2% of GDP to green investment in the following priority areas:

  • Improve the energy efficiency of existing housing stock
  • Renewable Energy
  • Transforming the National Grid
  • Delivering Sustainable Mobility
  • Public Sector Investments
  • Skills and Training
  • Green Infrastructure
